Cath,

I think my Uncle Charlie met your Uncle Paul one day on the road out of Enniscrone because he talks of meeting a man who, on learning he had a heavy cold, offered him a 'cure'.

A few hours later he was driving into Ballymote town when he met a funeral coming down the hill to the Church. Being the respectful soul that he is (and he's another who reads the death notices first thing each morning 'because you never know' - I suppose its as well to be sure you haven't passed away in the night!) he stopped to pay his respects.

It was then he noticed that (at least as far as he was concerned) there were 3 hearses side by side across the road (for those who don't know Enniscrone is a good 30 miles from Ballymote!) which made him realise he was 'a little worse for wear'.

Anyhow, he drove home and took to his bed for three days because each time he got up ('with a divil of a thirst') he fell over after drinking a few glasses of water.

To this day he says it was the worst cold he has ever had in 80+ years!
