Jeff's tranceformer was a pure revelation to those of us hip hop Dj wannabees back in the day. The crowd was hyped as hell, but it was the DJ's that it really affected.
Jeff was the first tranceformer I'd heard myself in his amazing set at the DMC battle, but immediately after Jeff it seemed like the whole Philly network came out of the woodwork. Cash Money, Tat Money, Supreme - all employing their own variation of the super-clean tranceformer style.
I remember we always used to fight over who cut the best, but it's basically a useless argument. They were all dope as hell.
Gotta remember, this was 86 - before these guys dj's pretty much cut in either the back-and-forth zigga-zigga style like Flash, Marley or Jam Master Jay, or the quick skip and chirp style of folks like Howie Tee or Two Live Crew's Mr. Mixx.
The effect the Philly cats like Jeff had was immediately apparent in New York with DJ's like Clark Kent and Johnny Juice Rasado (P.E.'s "real" DJ, for those who don't know).
Grandmaster Flash even adopted the tranceformer for his "On the Strength" record back in 87, calling it a "flashformer", with mixed results.
Liek I say, a lot of folks copied the style, but Jeff pioneered it on wax. To most of us, then, his was the first we'd heard.
