Subject: GH's Geary On Revisting Laura's Rape

Lulu is reeling from learning the deepest, darkest secret of her parents' lives, something that viewers have known since 1979, when Luke raped Laura at the campus disco. Of course, Luke and Laura relived the incident back in 1998, when their son, Lucky learned of the sordid story. Anthony Geary wanted to make sure the scenes wouldn't be repetitive, so the five-time Emmy winner put his own spin on the scenes. Geary says "I wanted to take an approach that was less emotional. He's actually trying to protect Laura in the story. I decided that his concern was that Lulu would think of her mother as an abused woman, a woman who fell in love with a rapist and then continued to be abused throughout her life silently. I thought the most important thing to Luke was not to take care of himself and make her 'understand' where he was coming from or how desperate he felt. It was more important that he protect her vision of her mother. So, it was important to insert lines about the power of Laura's forgiveness and that if she hadn't decided not to live as an abused woman, not be victimized by the event, they never would have been able to have a life together. My intention was to have Luke let Lulu know that, whatever she felt about him, her mother was heroic." Luke's not looking too heroic to his daughter, especially since he took so long to come clean. "Luke had been putting it off and, in his heart, he knows he should have told her," sigh Geary. "His position has always been that it was nobody's business but his and Laura's, and if Laura could live with it, then it was nobody else's business. But, when you have children, your business is not that clean."
