Cross posting from other places :-)

Since the prime example I knew of the helmet is posted on Helmet Hut, I e-mailed the site Friday night about the picture. What follows is the e-mail exchange we had:
(from me)
I've long doubted the existence of the fabled black outline on the 1973 Philadelphia Eagles helmet. In looking at the photo on the Helmet Hut site of Roman Gabriel, it's very obvious to me that the wing on the left side of the helmet (right side of the photo) doesn't have any black outline (this is particularly visible at the front along the mid-line of the helmet, and where the wing begins to go toward the back of the helmet). The rest of what is perceived as an outline is simply shadowing.
ESPN Classic broadcast its NFL Game of the Week on Friday November 19. That game was a 1973 matchup between Buffalo and Philadelphia. It's clear during the game footage that no outline is present on the Eagles wing. I'm going to take the VHS tape to a local photography shop and have them extract some images so that I can post them at various helmet sites. Please let me know if you'd like a copy.

Well we certainly understand your opinion but we see it much differently. Since we are the manufacture of the RK2, RK4 and RT2 suspension helmets for Riddell and the NFL we work very close with the HOF and many artifacts, we have spoken with several players and feel quite comfortable. That one picture is not what we made our final assessment with, though that one picture clearly shows a black outline on both sides of the helmet and clearly shows the guards decal. A shadow would never outline a complete decal on both sides... But this is what makes the hobby fun, we never claim to know it all and really appreciate all of our readers help. Any thing you could provide would be interesting, also we never claimed they used the logo the entire season. The Eagles did some strange things over the years, even had a night game helmet. The Skins put a feather on the back of their helmet with 3 games left in the season, many many examples of a PRE Licensing NFL era ;-)
(me again)
Thanks for the response. I've taken the liberty of commenting on the photo, since I'm still not convinced that there is an outline. If you would, please take a look at what I have to say, since I tried to explain it to someone else and wasn't sure that I made myself clear.

We will have to agree to disagree friend. I would suggest you talk with Roman, couple players or the equipment guys of that time. We have both of Roman's early game RK shells but he never kept any of his Eagles. Thanks again for your interest!!

Any comments on my critique of the photo? Or anything else? I purchased a book on ebay this weekend that should have some 1973 photos in it – I’ll see what I find and let everyone know.
