Date Posted: 00:05:12 11/28/04 Sun In reply to: cole 's message, "Re: Vintage helmets" on 20:15:53 11/27/04 Sat klaus, i am as of now doing intensive research on not only vintage helmets of all teams since 1933, but also the uniforms. when i am finished (i am currently scoping 1939), i should be able to cite ALL nfl teams' helmets since 1933. and will pass the info on to you. contrary to popular belief, since 1935, ALL nfl teams have sported helmets of color (except for the 1945 giants). around 1929 or 1930, leather helmets became reinforced, meaning that they were not simply a leather "cap", as it were. and this enabled helmet manufacturers to color the helmets into the leather without any problems. leather helmets were the norm until the 40's, when a few players started sporting the new-fangled plastic helmets. the nfl banned plastic helmets in 1948 until the helmets were shatter-proof. in 1949, plastic helmets returned, and several teams, notably the rams, redskins, and eagles converted the whole team to plastic. hope this will help! timmy b [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
