klaus,

saw a better image of the helmet in question today and in fact, the playoff bowl helmet is EXACTLY as worn since the 1963 season; black helmet with yellow stripe, white numbers front and back flanking the stripe (or if a single digit, white number inside the stripe (note ben roethlisberger)), and "steelers" not "steel" inside the hypocycloid circle.

as a side note, since 1971, the steelers do not have the numbers on the front of the helmet in the pre-season. for whatever that's worth.
