Attorney general: Fieger associate threatened to disclose extramarital affair

Read the prepared remarks from Mike Cox's news conference.

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox said Wednesday an associate of attorney Geoffrey Fieger threatened an extramartial affair of Cox would be disclosed if Cox did not drop an investigation into a 2004 Fieger political contribution.

Cox said the associate was an attorney named Lee O’Brien. The political contribution in question was a $457,000 donation Fieger made during the 2004 Michigan Supreme Court races.

O’Brien could not be reached late Wednesday afternoon. Fieger, who is considering running for Cox’s job, said in a statement that “Cox’s false accusations against me underscore that he is not qualified to be in a position of trust.”

Fieger is quoted by the Associated Press as saying O’Brien is not an associate.

Cox is a Republican. Fieger, of Southfield-based Fieger, Fieger, Kenney & Johnson, announced in October an exploratory committee for the Democratic nomination.

In remarks at a Detroit press conference, Cox stated that he had an affair and had told his wife about it in March 2003. “What I did was inexcusable,” Cox said. “As you can imagine, it provided a fork-in-the-road for our marriage: We could choose to get divorced or work on our marriage.”

He said the couple worked on the marriage and “made it stronger than ever.” As years passed “this became old news in our family: a private matter between a husband and wife,” Cox said.

In a widely distributed Wednesday e-mail, he said he and his wife “divulged this very personal family matter in order to stop an attempt to prevent me from doing the job I was elected to do.” Cox said he has not and will not “be deterred from doing my job – even if it causes me personal embarrassment.”

Fieger, in his statement, said Cox’s “profoundly poor judgment and behavior extend not only to Mr. Cox’s personal life but has now spilled over to his public trust. He should resign.”
