Sri Aurobindo did some regular pranayama early in his sadhana, maybe starting around 1904 or so, this period lasting either for months or years. I do not know who taught it to him; quite possible that it is documented somewhere.

Afterwards (1908-09/10) there was only - for a short time - the Maharashtrian Yogi Vishnu Bhaskar Lele, and after that he had no living guru.

Some years earlier, in Baroda or Gujarat in 1902 or 1903 he met a highly respected yogi Swami Brahmananda of Chandod (not to be confused with Ramakrishna's disciple of the same name), but not as a disciple. He met some other spiritual personalities in the 1900's as well, but they were not important to his sadhana.

There are about half a dozen, detailed accounts from his own pen about the results he gained from his practice of pranayama. They are very similar to what I have heard from several advanced Kriya practitioners and other Kriya sources.
