Yogananda says devotion is more important than all else and often equates it with churning the ether which is basically japa. He also says to keep up the whispers all day.

Sanyal gita also says devotion is more important than technique in many places as I recall.

In many kriya lines they do japa in the chakras in pranayam and say that is the real way to do japa and later when you hear om that is highest japa of the "name".

So here we may have 3 levels of japa: the standard one (or for SRF churning the ether with reveal thyself etc, the japa in chakras in pranayam, and finally the dissolving in om. Yukteswar says in holy science that om dissolving is the esse of bakti yoga.
