How ridiculous to think that God is within everyone and yet you need an intermediary to find it!

Well, you may try on your own.

I think the main reason for Guruvada is that people who manage to get out of the normal consciousness find themselves in mysterious realms which they know nothing about, and without guidance are likely to lose their bearings. So naturally it is best to have an experienced guide showing you the right path.

I suspect those realms to correspond to or be triggered by our own subtle psychological condition, qualities and defects in some way. Hence the stress on purity, in Raja Yoga too. Worship of the guru or an idol means to fix one's consciousness to the highest and purest possible point, and if such a devotional habit precedes getting into altered states, there may be less danger. If there is also a living master, he may want to keep you from self-delusion.

Guidance is something to seek for, not something a 'master' will thrust upon you without your explicit wish and consent.
