The reverence to Guru is based on the philosophical principle that God is everywhere. By this God is in us as well as in the Guru,as He is everywhere else.

But as we are not realized at this point of time and by assumption the Guru is Realized it is only meet that we recognize this fact and worship Guru as God. It is our Bhava(Strong mental feeling) that is important.

When an individual has this strong mental makeup and worship Guru as God then the Universal Principle respond automatically responds favourably.

Now for this to happen there must be absolute faith in the Guru Chosen regardeless of the Guru's actual status. That is why one should be careful in choosing the Guru. Once chosen we must stick to him.

In fact the Hindu scriptures say that for a woman, regarding her Husband as God will take her to God Realization faster and easier. Because it is easy for a woman to have a strong mental attachement and close physical relation with her husband. Now if it is channelized ina spiritual sense then the progress is faster. She does not need other techniques.

The principle in both Guru and Husband's case is based in the following.

1) God is everyewhere and so in the Guru and in the Husband.

2) The mental state(Bhava) is the one that decides the result.

3) Once the faith and the relationship is established the result automatically takes place.

It is the God principle in the chiosen Guru and Husband that reacts not the human principle. That is why choosing a God realized one as Guru makes this all the more efficacious .

Finally, those who argue against such faith in Guru etc.,should understand that they are arguing against a human concept not the inherent God in the Guru, which is what is important here.

Lastly I am glad to see some good spiritual matters being discussed in this forum. Although most of the topics are from the Kriya Yoga standpoint, I would request you to have a study of Adi Sankara's Advaitic Philosophy . That would answer many queries being raised here.

As a sequel to you I recommend the readers to read about the Guru Tradition coming down from Adi Sankara til date in Sringeri in South India. All the Gurus have been great yogis and realized souls in addition to being great Scholars in Indian scriptures. The tradition is pristine pure. In fact the Acharya form 1910 to 1955 was One Chandra Sekhara Bharathi who was a great Jivanmukta and great preceptor equal to that of Sadasiva Brahmendra Sarawati (mentioned in Autobiography of a Yogi), a contemporary of Ramana Maharishi. Somehow Paramahamsa Yogananda did not meet him and so western world did not know about him. All sincere seekers in spiritual realization should read about him. His successor Abhina Vidyatheertha (1920 - 1989) was also a Jivanmukta and a yogi as great as Paramahamsa Yogananda. There is a book 'Yoga, Enlightenmet, Perferction' which beautifuly describes his yogic practices and realization.

Although Paramhamsa Yogananda does not talk much abour Adi Sankara, it is Adi Sankara who is largely responsible for the preservation of Hindu Dharma from the onslaught of other systems of Philosophy and his pholosophy is the most vogue in India today.

And in passing I would like to mention that the Kriya yoga of PY and Babaji seems to be based on the Sankya Yoga principle which although is conducive for the ultimate Spiritual Realization. is not accepted as the correct philosophical sytem by Gaudapada in his commentary on Mandukya Upanishad. Gaudapads was the Sankara's guru's Guru. Gaudapada's Ajatavada(No creation philosophy) is based on Badarayana's (Veda Vyasa) Brahma Sutra.

Sankara's technique is twofold. 1) to worship God with qulities to reach realization of teh chosen god eqivalent to Py's Sabikalpa Samadhi and then to realize God without Qualities (Nirbikalpa Samadhi) and then gradually to reach the stage of complete freedom by extinguishing all the Karmic bonds.

In nutshell the Advaitic system of Sankara enjoins 1) Chittha Suddhi(purification of mind stuff) by performing our duties in a spirit of surrender to God 2) Performing Upasana, i.e doing ritualistic worship to chosen form of God. This phase also coreesponds to yoga practices it is comprehensive form. Meditatation, samnadhi al fall into this. The goal is to develop an One pointed mind.
3) The last stage is to enter into the Spiritual enquiry with the mind rendered pure and one poinetd by the previous two stages, with the help of a realized Guru and aided by Vedas and reason. This evetually results in true Spiritual Wisdom transcending all Visions, powers etc., reaching the Natural State.

Regards
S.Sankaran
