Krishna in the Gita states that in the beginning it is difficult for the devotee to worship the Unmanifested Absolute

It is even considered dangerous, because for the mind anything it cannot grasp at once may pass as "absolute". You may deceive yourself. Whereas an Ishta is something concrete, something the mind can get fixed on.

Meditating on Ishta is one of the fundamental practices of yoga, but it has to be done in the right spirit. Interestingly it is generally advised to take an Ishta different from your guru, similar to the fact that Mantras in most cases also focus on non-physical deities. Maybe it was so designed because gurus that have risen to a state beyond being a mere instructor are few, and few are also the sadhaks who are able to cultivate the right attitude in spite of the guru's human deficiencies.
