You have a point but I dont think its as clear cut or simple as that. Granted there are few true Gurus who are eternally fully free and so its important to maintain your discriminative awareness when dealing with any Guru or spiritual teacher, but in terms of actual worship of the Guru as an embodiment of the divine, there is nothing wrong with it. Its actually a very high path to take for those with the inclination for it and has been said to be the fastest way to realization.

Krishna in the Gita states that in the beginning it is difficult for the devotee to worship the Unmanifested Absolute, so he needs to take the aid of an ishta upon whom to focus devotions. If the devotee is so inclined to take his own Guru as that ishta then where is the fault in that?

Is there something perhaps in your own nature that makes you averse to this kind of thing? There's no reason to try and convince others in a blanket statement that its wrong and outdated if its simply not your temperament to do so.
