The exact reason why Mr Walters was asked to leave SRF is not clear, but as you say Mr Walters claim that it was due to a simple personality clash is not very believable.

In 1995 SRF wrote in an open letter " out of respect for Mr. Walters’ privacy,"(we have not)" engaged in any public discussion of the circumstances that made it necessary for the SRF Board to ask Mr. Walters to resign.* {Ananda’s September 30, 1995 open letter claims that Mr. Walters was dismissed unfairly, and that this decision was based on an "emotional analysis of his motives for action.’ Such a claim forces us to clarify, however, that it was not a subjective analysis of his motives that led to his dismissal, but specific actions of his basic pattern of behavior and that the situation was discussed with him on many occasions in the months before his departure."

Shortly before being asked to leave SRF Walters was effectively kicked out of India for some reason. In "A Place Called Ananda" Mr Walters wrote “The police arrived one day with a notice to the effect that if we didn’t leave India within ten days, we would be deported.”

In 1995 Mr Walters was asked in court if he was asked to leave SRF because of a sexual relationship, but he refused to answer the question.
