This is a VERY common practice in India called japa, repetition of the name of GOD. EVERY HINDU probably has a mantra, classically they are repeated into the right ear. One is supposed to do it 24-7 all the time. Meditation is great, but how many hours does one spend NOT in meditation, but simply doing other things, like eating, driving, working, etc. This is what the mantra is for so you are continually practice it. The mantra is your saving grace, like any spiritual practice, to be done with concentration and feeling. It is good before meditation to transition or afterwards to merge more with the chosen deity. If you see the movie or read about Ghandi, he called God when he was shot (it was really "Ram", his mantra) It is the goal of many Hindus to die with the name of their chosen deity on their lips, therefore one must repeat it 24-7. There is a book called something like The Way of the Pilgrim (Anonymous) about an Eastern Orthodox pilgrim who is doing the "Jesus mantra" and all he goes through doing this. It is your companion in life, you are never alone. Hanuman was able to cross the ocean by taking Ram's name (though originally I think Ram asked him how they would get across) The Name IS the same as God because it is a vibration. That is what malas are for, frequently people are doing so many malas of this or that mantra, you can have more than one. It gives you specific powers sometimes (like for healing), but it can be a LOT of malas worth (I was given one for healing, but it is a LOT of work, so haven't "gotten around to it yet."
