There is a book called something like The Way of the Pilgrim (Anonymous) about an Eastern Orthodox pilgrim who is doing the "Jesus mantra" and all he goes through doing this.

Yes, this book is a perennial spiritual classic. Some years later, one Shimonach Ilarion wrote another book, "In the Caucasian mountains" and claimed that the Name is God Himself. That was the beginning of a fierce theological dispute:

Sri Aurobindo once remarked something to the effect that of all nations the Russian spiritual mentality is the one next to that of India.

I believe outside orthodox Christiantiy this practice was later revived by Thomas Merton.
