I first came upon the "hamsa" version in the early 70's, in a book on basic meditation techniques by an author who mostly wrote on hatha yoga, but who had spent time with Ramana Maharsi in India. I get the impression that it's not particularily "secret" there. Thanks to the the web, it's like the method of zazen, pretty much public domain. I consider this a good thing.
