Blood was everywhere, soaking into the sand beneath her knees, running down her back and soaking her clothes. On her knees rested Kemanoral's head, his pale face ashen with pain. Blood ran from the cut on his forehead into his silvery blond hair. Tears slid unnoticed down her cheeks to meld with the blood and her hands stroked back the hair away from his eyes. Her voice was low, loud enough for the one resting on her lap to hear, though others would be hard pressed to hear it any distance away. The song was one he had taught her when she had still been little. Back then he had protected her when she needed it, comforted her when her tears stained her face, and even bullied her when he thought she needed it. He had always been there for her, someone to depend on, a friend, mentor and big brother all rolled into one. Now the sight of his chest rising and falling with a laborious effort caused a pain to squeeze her heart, drowning out the pain that lanced down her back. The dragon in the sky was forgotten, those that stood upon the beach so distant from her thoughts it made it seem like they weren't even there at all. Blood seeped from a ragged wound in Kemanoral's chest where a scale had struck and lodged right below his lungs. Using the gift that melded heart and song together she struggled to place herself between her dearest friend and his pain, and only partially succeeding. In her mind ran the litany that was not spoken aloud, the words of the gentle melody all that passed her lips. Please...... Please Keman don't die. Big brother stay with me, don't leave me, why won't someone help us?
Please Keman.....
.. please...
... don't.............

die.
