A smile. Soft and gentle. Equally disarming, but with a more realistic light to it.

She sat, dark blue cloak drifting to rest lightly behind her and covering chair's back. The tavern stirred restlessly around her, something of a feeling to the air. Something savoured and dreaded all at once.

Yes, very much like Salvation, this night. When Fate began to interweave herself in the lives of men, Destiny receeded, choice falling away though not completly gone. Always a chance to change. With her favors, it became more of an opportunity. Djali and Valenthe had merged, Wyrd had come to existence, she had found her freedom... all through Fate's will... and Fate withdrew her hand, returning Destiny and Chance to their rightful standings. Too much like Salvation; the air seemed to tingle.

"Icewine, please." Navy blue hood dropped to her shoulders, gold scripted runes catching against the firelight as green eyes glinted in gentle mimic.

Young girl bobbed a curtsey and dashed away, light upon her feet and deftly dodging those that would stall her for more than food or drink.

Chaos leaned back against her chair, a strand of hair falling near-black against her cheek and trailing towards shoulders now exposed by cloak's revealing. A slender hand reached for the girl's offered glass as she scurried back, golden tanned skin reflecting a hint of persperation that was never quite there.

"Wait a moment child." Second hand revealed itself as the child turned to hurry away, touching her arm. The girl was a rat. Something of a half starved, beleagured little thing that looked as though she would never see a better day. Hope had frowned on this one. "Bring two bowls of stew and a loaf of bread, if you will."

The child dropped another curtsey and hurried away, thoughtful green eyes following her every step. Amazing, this world, that we can see a child half-starved and scarcely clothed and order our meals and look away. What have you allowed this place to become? Her answer was a simple one, whatever the children had chosen for it to become. Choice had made things as they were.

The girl looked up at her with frightened eyes as she sat, stubby fingers clutching the wooden spoon as though it would be teh savior of her life.

"Relax, child, I will not harm you." Green eyes sparkled with a slight energy of their own. It was not she that this child feared, but for one night fear would not dictate this child's life. "Eat. You look as though you have not done so in quite some time. You may keep me company in return, and does your master disagree with our arrangement, he may speak to me about it personally."

Rat of a child smiled thinly, a soft attempt at hope shining in blue eyes that should have been innocent, should have seen rivers and fields as she ran through them in a throng of those her own age. "Thank you, ma'am." She ate as though she had never tasted such as this.

"Do you have a name, child?" Slender boned hand brought wooden spoon to pale red lips, hot broth sliding between them as she ate a first meal of her own.

"Meleta." The girl smiled, brighter now as warmth returned to her face. The pleasures of a meal were often overlooked by those who had never been denied them. "What is yours, ma'am?"

A smile brushed red lips as spoon returned to bowl, the girl had courage for one in such a circumstance. "Chaos."

Movement caught her attention, drawing her eyes to the one she recognized as tavern's owner. She needed not look to see that Meleta had gone pale, the sounds of eating ceased as rough fingered man reached for her hair. "Excuse you." Her voice came across soft, same soothing tone as she had used before, and his fingers stopped in their motion. Meleta shrunk away, crawling from her chair to slink to Chaos' side, nearly behind her.

A ripple of tension crossed tavern's now silent population as she spoke for a second time. "My guest and I were enjoying our meal. Is there something I may help you with?"

His fingers dropped nerveless to his sides, as though a feeling of death had crossed him. Green eyes did nothing more than remain upon his own hazed brown ones. Those outside of silent overcoming of wits stirred, their source of drunken ammusement having ceased in its flow as all stopped to look. Someone cleared his throat as though it should break the tension. Owner's eyes blinked, dazed affect snapping away as anger overcame him. She was disrupting his buisiness and distracting his help. He stepped towards Meleta.

*

"Hush, child, they didn't feel it." Chaos wrapped her arms around the girl's trembling form, bringing her safely within the confines of her cloak as a mother would her frightened child. Black smoke drifted lazily heavenward as sandaled feet carried both 'mother'and child away from the charred remains of what had formerly been the grandest tavern in eastern Woodrow.
