Subject: Michael Bell
What is going on with Michael Bell??? He played just 2 minutes resulting in one turnover and one missed shot. Expectations were very high for him going into his senior season. It's too bad...he is a great representative of the University. I hope he can turn his season around.

I have all the respect that anyone can have for Michael Bell and Alvin Carter, but this is a production business and the best players must play the major minutes if the Stags are to be sucessfull. NO ONE IS OWED MINUTES!

Re: Michael Bell -- Running Man, 10:56:37am 01/16/06 Mon, [1]
I never thought that I would see the day when Bell would get only two minutes in a game. When I saw him as a freshman, I admired his defensive tenacity. Steals, deflections, playing the opponent's best player were all part of his game. Am I wrong or has this aspect of his play been missing for the last two or three seasons? I have been waiting for him to have a great impact, but as he moves into the final stages of his senior season I'm wondering if that will happen. For this team to succeed it needs a better than average contribution from him.

Re: Michael Bell -- JCM, 12:36:03pm 01/16/06 Mon, [1]
I guess I don't see what others are seeing. Bell has played pretty well this season. He was averaging more than 10 points a game when he was seeing playing time. He has been solid defensively. His shooting percentage has been higher than Todd's particulary from three point land.
The main reason Bell didn't play as much the last two games is Herbie Allen was on fire. TOT elected to stay with Allen who seemed to have the hot hand. I also think match-up wise, Herbie got the shot to cover Clark because Herbie matches up well with Clark from a quickness perspective. Bell while a strong defensive player, is not as quick as clark or allen.
The other reason Bell is playing less is Mamadou and Maxwell are now eligible, they are playing well and deserving minutes; someone needs to play less, and Bell certainly is one of the players who will see less time. Todd, Carter and Olgesby are all averaging less minutes since Maxwell and Mamadou returned, with Carter being the most affected, then Olgesby, Bell and Todd. The minutes have to come from somewhere and it seems TOT has found better player balance since this two guys became eligible to play.
Michael will get his minutes and continue to contribute given the right match-up's/circumstances. For now, I think he will be playing 10-20 minutes a game, rather than the 20 plus he averaged the first half of the season.

MVS has taken Bell's minutes because he hits the open 3 much more than Bell.

That's true. Compared to last year, MVS is getting some of the minutes Bell used to play. This season both players were getting 20+ minutes a game, but Bell's minutes have really gone down since the end of the first semester.

Michael Bell to me is a Kudjo Sogadzi type player. Fairfield seems to have so many of them over the years. They look to have enormous potential as freshmen. However they never really develop and only periodically seem to put it all together for any period of time. I hope he gains back his confidence and steps up before the end of the season. After all he is a senior.

Re: Michael Bell -- Nashville Stag Fan, 05:23:15pm 01/16/06 Mon, [1]
The reason Bell didn't get many minutes yesterday was mostly because others who can do the same things as he (especially shoot well), were having good games. TOT did a good job in not messing with the combination of players that were doing the job. That said, there will be many instances down the stretch when he will be needed, and I'm sure will do a great job. It really does change from game to game. He has hit big shots for us in the past, and even this year his 2 free throws against Siena in the last five seconds were a key to that win!

PT for Bell, Diakhate and Carter -- JoeStag, 07:24:55am 01/17/06 Tue, [1]
The other reason that Bell probably did not play that much was that St peters really did not play any forewards or wing type players. They basically played 2 centers and 3 guards...... even though its hard to give a position to Orta.
St Peters had nobody from 6-4 thru 6-7 on the court for most of the game. IMO, TOT decided not to play our three 6-4 guys..... Bell, Diakhate or Carter. We went as big as we could upfront and as quick as we could at guard.
IMO, Bell would be a good defensive match-up with Soliver tonight.
