Subject: Some Telling Stats

I know we have only played 2 games, and we were dominated so much in the St Joe's game that it would skew most stats, but I think some of these are still very telling:

- Carter has taken more shots (8) than MVS (7)....... and the have played the exact same number of minutes. That just should not be. MVS got to put it up like Bell who has shot 23 times.

- Some other stats on MVS's are just low like 1 reb, 1 steal, and an assist to turnover ration of 2 assists to Zero turnovers which is good, but also shows tha lack of aggressive play. MVS has to shoot and be aggressive if we are to win.

- Our frontcourt players are not committing PF's. Normally thats a good thing, but not in this case. MOS has a normal 6 PFs in two games, but Carter has only 2, Middleton has 1, and Reedal has Zero. So thats 3 PF's among those 3 players 72 minutes...... that has got to change, to at least show some presence and physicallness (is that a word) in the middle and to help MOS.

- Only 23 FT's on 2 games, but that number is skewed by the St Joes game where we shot only 3. Versus St Francis we drove to the hoop quite well with Han, Todd, and MOS.

- The distribution of Defensive rebounds are clustered as MOS has been very good with 14, and Bell, Todd, and Reedal have got their fair share, but check these totals out:
------- Carter has 1 defensive reb in 47 min
------- Middleton has Zero in 10 min
------- Han has Zero in 61 minutes, even though he has O-boards
------- MVS has 1 in 47 minutes
Thats 2 Defensive Boards in 165 minutes by those 4 players. TOT has mentioned that this team needs team rebounding. I don't care what size you are, 2 rebounds is way out of wack. And you should get some rebounds on 50-50 loose balls. FYI, Tyquan Goode averaged 3 defensive rebounds a game in only 30 mpg.

I might be flip-flopping here because I just said a few days ago that 2 games do not make a trend. But these numbers do say something of what has to improve. Hopefully these stats are an anomoly and not a trend..... we will see tonight.

Those Stats do say a lot. Goode at 5'5 averaged more rebounds per minute than most of the folks the stags have on the floor right now. That's a telling statistic.

Of course when your opponent shoots 55% there's not a world of defensive rebounding opportunities. Better ball defense would also play a role in improving the stags rebounding numbers.

I don't really have hope for a win tonight but I would like to see improvement in a variety of areas including ball/shooter defense, rebounding and ball movement on offense. While young, I expect this providence team to make noise as the season progresses...

if players are not getting it done on the boards then sit them. put reedal in there with mos and go full board with the outside shooting. play to our strength and don't worry about what we don't have. hit a few threes and ride the emotion of the game. did you know that its a fact that players jump twice as high after they hit a three, and this is a home game isn't it. this team has to have the mindset that we will outscore the opponent, and i do not think they are used to thinking that way. the fans surely aren't. i would like to see more of herbie too.

here is a stat for you
Reedal played SO LITTLE against PC
I REPEAT, SO LITTLE, and that COULD HAVE BEEN THE DIFFERENCE----that WAS the difference.
the kid can be a game breaker.
( MOS did not play much the first 2 years either )

Unless you are perceived as immediately ready to step on the court and play like Jon Han, TOT's philosophy is to sit on the bench and learn by watching games and participating in practice. How is one able to get ready to play in games by not playing in games, at least in some type of limited role. It sounds as if Greg Nero may be able to step in and play right away, but why in the world would a kid come to Fairfield to primarily sit for a year or more.

I think if you look at all the players over TOT's tenure, you will find that most started as freshman, and if not, then they played good amounts a freshman and probably started as sophs. The only exeptions to that are probably Middleton, Feleccia, and Carter (3 out of 15 recruits). I think TOT plays frosh more than the average coach, and if he doesn't there is usually a good reason.

Players started as frosh
-----------------------
Han
Todd
Max
Gai
Goode
Sogadzi
Thomson
Logan
Price
Clark

Players playing sigificant as Frosh or started as Soph
-----------------------------------
MVS
MOS
Bell
Delfico
Garcia

To be determined
-----------------
Herbie
Reedal
Hawkins

Did not play much as Frosh
---------------------------
Middleton
Feleccia
Carter

i cannot think of any freshman or other player that was screwed out of playing time except for leroy robertson and he was screwed by clark, who happend to be a freshman. if people think middleton or reedal should get more minutes then please state who gets less minutes. if you say carter, then we don't have a chance of beating providence. i do feel that reedal deserves middletons minutes.

I agree with Robertson, he should have started over Clark. But I would also add Delfico and Rob Thomson as 2 players that should have got more PT.

Delfico had to sit behind Logan who was another freshman at the time, and eventually played behind him in his soph and and half his junior year. I thought that was an injustice and I said that from Delfico's freshman year. In fact Maxwell started over Delfico for half of Delfico's senior year, and Delfico was a Captain and Mawwell a freshman.

Thomson also had PT taken away from him, and that was by a freshman too (named Gai).

So I think TOT gas started freshman to a fault at times

Reedal looked very tentative and a good step behind everyone else in his moments on the floor last night. The game was too close to let him learn on the job last night. If he produces in practice, he'll get his time just like Han and, now, Herbie.

There are backup minutes that Middleton and Reedal are battling for..... along with Carter's starter minutes. I think it all depends on the opponent. Carter was playing well, so leave him in. I would like to see him average a Seagrams 7 & 7, and he almost did that last night with 6pts and 7rebs.

Middleton got an opportunity last night because of Providence's height and has better defensive potential, but I think Reedal deserves a shot too. He seems to make other players better. But I think we are talking about 10-20 mpg that is available for both Middleton and Reedal.

I think Herbie will get his minutes as he gets experience and feels more comfortable, especailly with teh dribble. IMO, he was "the man" with "The ball" in HS. He has to adjust to being an off guard and not being "The man".

[> Recruiting Balance -- Menzies, 12:48:40pm 11/29/05 Tue, [1]

Max's issues and MOS's injury not withstanding, I hope we are not heading towards unbalanced rosters again.

Remember that Goode and Sogadzi (or at least one of them if Delfico could pass for a guard) had to start as they were the ONLY guards on that roster.

On another note, I hope Middleton can give us some minutes against MAAC-sized teams.
