Subject: Game Report from Brooklyn

If one of our strengths this year is shooting, then we did not do that, and that’s the main reason why we lost. We had quite a few good open look, but missed badly on a lot of them. We were definitely not hesitating on shooting the jumper, but if that is our main strategy, then we are going to have nights like this. That might be a good strategy vs St Joes or Providence where we are the underdog, but in a game we have a good chance of winning we have to attack the basket more like we did in the 2nd half.

We also had trouble with their 6-4/6-5 athletic players. They had a group of them that were quick, strong, athletic and could score. We really could not match up with those type of players. Wil will when Max and Mamadou are eligible, but the only guy that has some of those skills is Carter, and we have to get more defense and rebounding out of him and 1 rebound. I thought their 6-4/6-5 players were both quicker and stronger and that’s a tough combo to beat, especially when they shot better than us too

While I expected that they had the advantage at the 6/4/6-5 position, I thought we would have the advantage at guard…… but Todd and MVS did not have a good game. Todd's shooting was off and then he started to force it. And MVS was off, and he became somewhat tentative. He needs to go to the hoop, and I am disappointed he did not…. IMO, he will get fouled most times. Bell had a good start and end of the game, but struggled on his shot for the middle 25 min of the game….. but he drove and rebounded effectively.

We did play hard and really battled and were aggressive on loose balls and rebounding, but I felt St Francis was to "comfortable" before shooting the ball. I think some of that had to do with no Gai in the middle for intimidation, and we did not put as much physical pressure on them like Goode and Kudjo would. Some of that had to do with a zone that we played for a portion of the game.

On the positive side MOS and Han had very good games.

MOS battled hard on the boards and looked really good…… playing stong and agressive He rushed some of his inside shots, but overall he played like I expected him to. If a few more of those inside shots had dropped, he would have had 20pts. This is a very good sign.

Han had a fantastic debut. He controlled the game, and it is not far fetched to say he was the best player on the court. He did so many things well. He had many more than 2 steals (they must have cedited another player, or called it a turnover). But he was very athletic on defense, and has a quick 1st step to the hoop. He can score and create offense in a variety of ways.

When you think we lost Gai, Goode, Kudjo, Maxwell for this game, and experienced players likeTodd and MVS did not have good games, its easy to undertand why we lost. Plus ST Francis is good. I would equate them to team like Canisius in our league this year. Small gym, but a nice set-up to see a game. Their coach has got talented athletic players playing hard.

IMO, a game we could have won, but if Han and MOS continue to play like that, and Todd and MVS play like they are supposed to…… That’s a good foundation as Bell's shots will start to drop. Add Max and Mamadou to give us much needed 6-4/6-5 athleticism and inside presence, and I think we are much more balanced. We need carter to step it this first semester, and/or Middelton to show more. Herbie and Reedal played the typical frosh game as they struggled and need to settle down. But han came ready to play.

no mention of oglesby. and with the depth at guard, only han, todd and mvs got major minutes. whats up with that. certainly its a disapointing loss but i think todd has to play better and we have to get dewitt back. any hope for middleton, why only 2 minutes for him. we need an upset against saint joes, pc or iowa to not go 0-4.

Its ironic that we used to be upset by getting beat by teams that had athletic 6'6" and 6'7" players up front.
Now, according to Joe Stag's report, we got beat by a team that had better 6'4"/6'5" players. Our program is clearly going backwards.

It's only one game, but the reality is that this was probably the most winnable game on our out-of-conference schedule.

Disappointing to see that Middleton only merits two minutes. Has he progressed that little?

Looking at the boxscore, about 75% of our shots were taken by guards. Only MOS, Carter and Reedal took shots among our frontcourt players and even they took a good number of threes.

This team has virtually no inside threat on offense and opponents will be able to attack our interior defense with impunity. The loss of Gai is HUGE.

We really have to hope that our lack of size will be less of a detriment in the MAAC, but until those games arrive, we should not expect the W-L results to be very positive. If 6'4" players from St Francis can control us, what will St Joes/Providence/Iowa/G'town do?

Alas, it is but one game and our perpetual fan's optimism will likely be back by Monday evening.

Forgot Oglesby. He made a nice drive, an a great layup for a han pass. but he also committed some coltly turnovers. Han and Todd were the most effective on penetrating thats why they got the most fouls

The 6-4/6-5 players were effective for St Francis because that is their strength. It also seams that our "current' weakness because those players combined talent with quickenss and strength. Max and Mamadou's retuen should rectify that problem.

But I think MOS and Carter did a good job on their 6-7, 6-8, and 6-9 players inside, as they were not as quick and mobile. So I don't think that just because we had trouble with the 6-4/6-5 guys means we are less equiped to handle the bigger guys. I think if they went bigger Middleton would have got more time.

Even thou 75% of out shots were from guards, that does not mean they were outside shots. Most of thee baskets and shots by Han and Todd were drives to the hoop and range from 2-7 foot shots. Without Max and Mamadou our inside game is limited to players driving to the hoop and getting O-boards. My guess is that our inside-outside shot ratio was 50-50..... but thats a lot higher outside shots than in the past. I would say 60% of our baskets were made from inside 7 feet and maybe half were layup/putbacks

Fans have been clamouring for us to shoot the outside shot..... well we did, but it was not like we did not sore from the inside. IMO, we have a better chance this year of beating St Joes/Prov/Iowa/Gtown because we have the potential to hit the outside shot...... but we have to make them.

Joe- you are the eternal optimist. Some day you are going have to look at this team without rose colored glasses.

Let me see if I understand this. We lost to a bunch of 6'4" guys? Am I in a 1960s time warp? I hope that I wake up from this, find Rod Serling smiling at me and learn that it did not happen.

Did Middleton do anything in the paint? He was so much taller than St. Francis's lineup, this is the kind of game where he should be a defensive demon, blocking shots and getting rebounds. Even when Thompson didn't score, he got his rebounds and shut down offensive drives.

Let's be clear. Middleton is not the answer. Because he is 6'9" and we are lacking, everyone wants to make him our savior.

He has height and talent but hasn't put it together..whether's it's heart, confidence or a lack of experience that keeps him from performing is not clear. he can help us. the question is when.

Hard to believe he can't help us more than Carter.
Middleton must really be a project if that is true.

The staff has pretty much given up on Geoff, at least for this year. If you can't judge this by his P.T., than you must think it is TOT's choice to play a forward and four guards.
