Subject: Bovarysm

We just finished reading Madame Bovary in my French class (well, most of it), and I'm wondering about external mediators. When we were talking about Don Quixote in Dr. Jackson's class, we mentioned that external mediators have a greater tendancy to be peaceful and internal mediators have a greater tendancy to be destructive. Emma Bovary certianly uses romantic novels/conventions as an external model, and while she obviously can't be a rival to an abstract concept, her Bovarysm destroys all around her. I guess my question is, since Emma has no obstacle, in the Girardian sense, where does all of her violence come from? I vaguely remember Girard saying in our earliest readings that all of her models are external, for instance, the people at the ball are much too far removed socially to be internal mediators, and etc. I'm wondering if this destructiveness comes from her inability to fit everyone/thing else into her model. Why is Don Quixote relatively peaceful while Emma leaves a train of destruction behind her?
