Subject: Speaking of Zombies...

Again to shamelessly plug a show...

"Zombie Prom," a musical, opens this coming week in Markel; hope you see it. It might get you thinking about scapegoats. (I won't give you a summary--you need to see it.)

There's a song called "Then Came Johnny" in which the high school students--who have been thrown into a crisis because of the principal's anti-zombie policy--heap all blame for the unrest in their society on one of their own. Jonny Warner, a nuclear zombie (trust me, see the show), is the scapegoat of this song; he was a transfer student who started dating the most popular girl in school. He bears marks of a scapegoat because he is both at the extreme outside and inside of the society. But the principal has threatened to cancel Prom, and all the students have turned on Jonny. As we'll see in a moment, even Jonny himself believes he is the cause of all the unrest.

Anyway, here are some of the lyrics:

"Wake up every morning, nothing is the same,
What a time to be a teen,
Life's a nonstop Halloween
Since Jonny made the scene.
And suddenly the school is in a buzz.
Ain't no goin' back to what was.

Then came Jonny!
Life is like a movie that jumped right off the screen.
Life went from black and white to atomic green!

Caution lost and bridges burned
Since the day that Jonny returned!

Now all the things I used to love are looking pretty tame
Nothing is the same...
Thanks to Jonny!"

Then, Jonny and his girlfriend Toffee enter the scene, singing:

"How--how did this come to pass?
How--how could we know?
I'd gladly trade THIS MESS WE'VE MADE
For a chance to go back once more
To the life that we knew before!"

--

So even in a musical comedy like "Zombie Prom" (not high art, folks), we can see traces of these things at work. And at a time when we're about to watch a well-made zombie film, what better foil than a hokey zombie musical?

Hope you come!
