I just saw the play too. I wonder if, just for fun, we give the whole play a Girardian reading. I wonder if we could call the play a mythology. Then perhaps, Jonny Warner's return could somehow be his divination. As you see in the play, the crowd that did not like him, suddenly becomes his friend after his return from the dead. He then becomes a symbol for love that never dies.
Girardian readings can run throughout this play. We very clearly a blurring of distinctions through the popular girl and the outcast coming together to the dismay of the community. However, after he dies and becomes immortal, both prohibitions and the ritual spring up. Prohibition, because the principal of the school will not allow the outcast to become part of the school again. But, at one point in the year, during the prom festival, the ritual breaks down all prohibition and even the principal revives a dead love.
It might just work...
