I think that what we mean by the chorus not being truthful is that they are just as subject to their surroundings and the situation as anyone else is. Although you have a good point about the fact that they would accurately represent the community's sentiment, and thereby represent the community truthfully, that doesn't mean that their words are truthful. I think that what we tend to think, in regards to the chorus, is that they are somehow an omniscient, all knowing voice that represents things as they really are, when really they are just an emotional group, or 'mob' if you want, that represents things as they see them. I don't think it would be that different from being involved in a situation where you get caught up in the moment and describing the appearance of things and then returning to your description and seeing, in retrospect, that you were only noting things as they appeared and not as they are.

I think we should definitely pay attention to the chorus, but we shouldn't trust them to present us with what things really are. We should trust their words only as far as representing what things appear to be and realize that they are just as susceptible as any other character would be to making mistakes in the heat of the moment.
