Another reason why Christ had to be human lies in the classic sacrificial model. The single victim must be not only different in some way, but also a member of the community. Even if he is marginalized, the victim must belong to the community somewhat, so that he can "attract violent impulses to himself". p. 39 of Violence and the Sacred explains this really well. Even though Dr. Jackson says that in a strictly Girardian context it is not necessary that Jesus be divine, it is still necessary that he be human. He has to belong to the violent human community in order to attract violence to himself; but he must be divine in order to reject participation in violence.
