That's a good question,Jon. I wonder if I meant that Christ had to be a man, or if I really meant to echo what Girard implies about Christ's divinity, a sort of "well, technically he didn't have to be, but it certainly makes sense that he was." By this I mean that God had always been giving a divine example of non-reciprocal violence, but when a clearer revelation was needed, it makes sense to give humans a human example, so explicit that they could not miss it (except that somehow everyone except Girard did). Luke 16 seems to make it clear, though, that those whose hearts were hardened against God's divine example would also reject Christ's divine-but-also-human example.
