It seems that Girard does not suggest people can live without original sin. Girard is not suggesting how to prevent all violence, because it will always break out. Any violent storm can wreak carnage in a community. Similarly, anyone is going to sin and hurt those closest to them. However, Girard offers a model of how to end the proliferation of violence. It runs in cycles because we seek a scapegoat, and it escalates from there. So I don't find this Girardian thought to be contrary to original sin, though it certainly does not need it.
I find your suggested answer to the question highly interesting because it offers a mechanism for original sin. We will sin because our forefathers also have sinned and we imitate that. Does this mean that if we make Christ our model, we can eliminate original sin. If sin is not within us, but garnered through observation, is it simply a matter of finding the right model and filtering distractions? If this is so, then we could possibly eliminate sin on earth now that we have the appropriate model.
