That is definitely the best understanding I've heard so far about Girard and original sin, or Girard and Christian doctrine as a whole. Since we know Girard is a conservative Catholic, I had wondered for some time how he reconciled his ideas of human non-participation with Catholic ideas of original sin.

The interview Dr. Jackson mentioned on class on Wednesday sounds really promising; and the main premise sounded somewhat like an articulation of the Christian idea of sinful human nature, but with Girard's own vocabulary. If many people would say that only God could come to earth and not lead a sinless life, and Girard says that only God could wholly reject violence, they seem to be saying much the same things. In matters of theology, Girard seems to me to describe the concept of sin in a fairly traditional way, using the language of violence. Though he doesn't use the term "original sin", he definitely describes humans as prepetually trapped within a cycle of violence, the only exception being Christ.
