It seems to me that the only significant difference between Freud’s super-ego and mimetic desire is that Freud says the super-ego, the moral part of the mind, is the last part of the child’s mind to develop. I understand Girard’s theory to say that mimetic desire is present from day 1, even before the child can think rationally (with the ego)…although perhaps simultaneously with the id rather than prior to it. Also, the super-ego, as the moral part of the mind, has two parts: the ego-ideal and the conscience. The former appropriates the parents’ approval of x, the other imitates the parents’ disapproval of y. Girard’s theory, however, emphasizes that amoral desires are mimetic, too, and that mimetic desire therefore precede Freud’s super-ego.
