It seems to me that the only significant difference between Freud�s super-ego and mimetic desire is that Freud says the super-ego, the moral part of the mind, is the last part of the child�s mind to develop. I understand Girard�s theory to say that mimetic desire is present from day 1, even before the child can think rationally (with the ego)�although perhaps simultaneously with the id rather than prior to it. Also, the super-ego, as the moral part of the mind, has two parts: the ego-ideal and the conscience. The former appropriates the parents� approval of x, the other imitates the parents� disapproval of y. Girard�s theory, however, emphasizes that amoral desires are mimetic, too, and that mimetic desire therefore precede Freud�s super-ego.
