Subject: Choragos and Oedipus

The passage said by Choragos on p. 72 of "exodos" in "Oedipus Rex" was brought up the other day in class, "Your fate is clear, you are not blind to that. / Would God you had never found it out!" There was much discussion about what Choragos's intentions were in that passage, whether this last line was said in sincerity or merely said to add salt to Oedipus's wounds. I believe it was also mentioned that this idea of returning to ignorance and living in such ignorance is a terrible suggestion. When I first read it, though, I found myself reminded of "The Bacchae" and the tragic realizaton Pentheus's mother has when it is revealed to her that she killed her son. I think Dr. Jackson mentioned when we discussed "The Bacchae" in class that if we could do one thing for Pentheus's mother it would be to make her forget or to keep her blind from such a realization. I wonder if this reaction and Choragos's words aren't related. That was my initial reaction, but I'm not sure...maybe I'm just being sucked into the Choragos/Chorus's false view of the world.
