Subject: Bottom 10 percent

I was talking with my dad about a leadership class he is going to be taking at Quantico and he mentioned a real story from a previous class he heard. It was a true story about a guy, let’s call him Jim since I can’t remember his name, who would fire the bottom ten percent of his workers every once in a while. My dad and I continued to talk about how eventually the people would not focus on their work at all; they would only focus on making their coworkers look worse/less productive then themselves. This reminded me of Girard. The original object (the productivity/job) would become somewhat lost in the competition. Jim is an example of poor leader obviously. Although it makes sense to get rid of people who are not helping the company but when it gets to the point where people are purely trying to point out others faults/failures it seems it would do more damage than good for the company. I’m not sure how much Girard’s theory really could be applied to a situation like this but it was what first popped into my mind.
