Subject: Dieting

My dad is really into all the fad diets, and it just got me thinking if Girard’s theory applies to something like this too. It seems that one of the primary ways you can tell the difference between the diets is how they compare themselves to other diets. Personally I cannot tell the difference between most of them. They also usually have before/after pictures. I’m always skeptical of them since sometimes they look pretty staged (i.e. someone not standing up straight and pushing out their stomach compared to good posture and sucking in their stomach and smiles on the “after” shots, not “before”). When dieting most people seem to have a picture of some model or athlete or celebrity that they want to look like. I also find it interesting because the person trying to lose weight seems unconscious of the fact that they have a completely different body type, and it will take a lot more than a photo to successfully lose the amount of weight they want. I know in my dad’s case he is probably motivated by his parents. His side of the family leans toward being obese, and my mom’s side does not. He has tried so many different diets that my mom and I can’t help but roll our eyes when we see he’s trying another one, but we don’t have the same problem (or at least we treat it differently) as him.
