The questions you bring up about your dad are interesting. I’m not sure if someone could be their own mediator. It seems as if your sister has brought out something in your dad that he has probably (as it sounds like with how he tries to impose sports on his children) been holding back for some time. Since your sister took action and has pursued sports he might see her motivation and use that to motivate himself to pursue sports again himself. It is also possible that he is being motivated by the media’s portrayal of youthfulness or what is considered “sexy”. It doesn’t seem to take much effort to see how much “sex appeal” is used in advertising especially. Also, with sports the really popular athletes are young and just happen to usually look good – for example David Beckham (although he is “older” in the soccer world) seems to be pretty popular and not just for his athletic abilities anymore (i.e. his wife, etc.). Figures like these probably motivate more people than would like to admit it. Youth is something highly desired now-a-days. Correct me if any of what I say is wrong, this is just how I guess I read into it all. I know this doesn’t really answer your question if you can be your own model, and it seems like looking back at your youth could be a strong motivation but I doubt that would be the only thing motivating you. Would that be enough or would you need something more modern (for example one of your children or something seen in a magazine/TV) to bring out the desire?
