Subject: Another thought on self-defense
In reply to: Erin Risch 's message, "Re: How Unconscious is it REALLY?" on 21:10:26 03/13/08 Thu

The longer I'm married, I grow increasingly suspicious that protecting oneself, or at the very least one's family, is something so basic to our intended design that we ought to read Jesus' Sermon on the Mount as not prohibiting self-defense('Turn the other cheek;' 'Love your enemies;' 'Do as you would be done by'). I suspect that self-defense is as basic, and acceptable to God, as eating. If Christ had said, "If you are hungry, do not eat,' and left it at that, we would certainly not take His statement at face value. We would probably say, "He means that we should fast at times." So the question becomes, when should we turn the other cheek? I tend to think it is when we're being persecuted for our faith. And even then we are to be 'harmless as doves and wise as serpents,' as Paul says.
