I agree that mimesis is both a little nature and a little nurture. It is clearly partly nature, just look at animals even (especially monkeys and apes) mimic each other all the time. I think with the nurture part it might be magnified some by society. It is all about who you choose as a model too. Your statement about our society being self-conscious being a good thing is very true. At some point everyone probably thinks about what their actions look like to someone else, especially when the other is younger. The reason for watching what one does or says in front of a child is because the child might mimic them. I know when kids are a certain age the will pretty much repeat anything they hear and will say anything they are told to. I think consciousness of mimesis is definitely taught a lot today. I know I’ve been told plenty of times by my parents that I should “behave myself” and “set a good example” for the younger kids. At times this can be difficult, mainly depending on your age, since if you are close enough in age you might actually want to mimic them rather than vice versa.
