Subject: Imitated desire: Imogen is just like Ghismunda

The Fourth Day first story account of Ghismunda's affair with Guiscardo and her love for Guiscardo that follows only from her father's original admiration for Guiscardo which Ghismunda only imiites parallel exactly the drama of Shakespeare's Cymbeline. When Imogen falls in love with Guiscardo and then her father orders that they be seperated, she complains violently, "Sir / It is your fault that I loved Posthumus: You bred him as my playfellow, and he is / A man worth any woman; overbuys me / Almost the sum he pays" (1.1.145ff). In other words, Imogen acknowledges that she only imitates her father's love and care for Posthumus when she loves him. She understands that she does not participate in romantic love.
