Subject: Innocence

While reading Chapter 7 of Violence and the Sacred, I greatly enjoyed reading Girard's argument against Freud's consciousness of the Oedipal complex. I think that he is right in stating that a child would be unaware of his potential rivalry with his father. After all imitation is all that he has known. "The disciple's attraction to the model's object is wholly "innocent"; in seeking to take his father's place with his "mother as well," the son is simply responding in all candor to a command issued by the culture in which he lives and by the model himself" (Violence 174).

With this said, could I correctly infer that mimesis (or for Freud the Oedipus complex) is a societal construct imposed on our education rather than being an inherent quality? Society and culture therefore impose this view on children, who are "innocent" in their unknowing. Could this innocence of children be adult ambition forced upon them? What would humanity be then, if not a blank slate on which society imposes its own faults so as not to look bad.
