Another model that pops up throughout is that of Mary's father, despite the fact that he has been dead for years. It is interesting that Mary has always used her father as the perfect model for Tyrone to try to, but never succeed at, living up to. She reminisces happily about how her father spoiled her, especially when she got married, but when she imagines Tyrone in the same position she grows bitter and argues that he would never have spoiled his daughter if he would have had one. But when Mary blames Tyrone for contributing to Edmund's tuberculosis, and it is revealed that Tyrone is actually closer to Mary's father than she wants to admit, she denies any comparison between the two.

"You're to blame, James. How could you let him? Do you want to kill him? Don't you remember my father? He wouldn't stop after he was stricken. He said doctors were fools! He thought, like you, that whiskey is a good tonic!"
(A look of terror come into her eyes and she stammers.)
"But, of course, there's no comparison at all."
