Subject: Similarities to Oedipus

All complexes and fixations aside, there are structural similarities between the Oedipus of Sophocles and O'Neill's play. Specifically, the quick reciprocation of blame that arises out of no where between the Tyrone family. Act 1, pg 39 and 40 has one of the many examples of this. It reminds me of the first scene between Tiresias and Oedipus. It starts slow and escalates quickly- Tyrone: It would be like a curse... Jamie: She didnt have anything to do with it!
Tyrone:I'm not blaming her.
Jamie: Then who are you blaming? Edmund for being born?
Tyrone: You damned fool! No one was to blame.
Jamie:...You wouldnt pat for a first-rate...

Everyone, thinking that they are being accused, reciprocates and quickly accuses another. They read their fears and apprehensions in to one another, and interpret everything they see as accusatory. Its almost like they're all Oedipus: They each need to find somewhere to put the blame, somewhere other than themselves, before something happens. Except, as Dr Jackson Pointed out, nothing can happen to them here. No violence can purge the blame away.
