Subject: Comfort in Mimetic Theory

It was recently brought to my attention that many times in literature when there is happiness there is not necessarily comfort and where there is comfort there is not necessarily happiness. I think this actually plays well into Long Day's Journey. For example, in II.ii Tyrone and Edmund actually make amends for a short while, but then Mary enters in an upsets the balance, telling Edmund not to be so morbid and pessimistic. No one in this family is every happy and comfortable at the same time.

For me, while reading this, it really stuck me how no one was every content with any form of temporary resolution or happiness. They almost actively seek out disorder. I think this plays well in the mimetic cycle. There is always a striving for more, to be more like the model, to achieve something more. There is no comfort in mimetic theory because there is always something more to strive for.
