Subject: Representation of Mimesis

In his interview "The Anthropology of the Cross," Girard says that mimesis is reflexive, not contemplative. He also says that later along the timeline, there comes "the possibility of representation" and that such representation "requires some degree of reflection (269). These thoughts seem interesting when connected with the idea, particularly strong in Shakespeare, of art as a representation. Girard claims that his thesis arises from a close examination of literary texts; he says that the texts reveal the true nature of mimesis and the scapegoat mechanism. According to what he says here, this comes about in many ways because, when an artist desires to give a true representation of nature, to truly replicate the movements of the human heart in art, he will begin to reflect on human nature and thus will encounter the nature of mimesis.
