In considering just who was in the crowds that shouted "crucify him", Girard suggests that "The fact that even the disciples cannot resist the effect of the Scapegoat reveals the power exerted by the persecutor's account over man" (Scapegoat, 105). In other words, according to Girard's gospel reading, the disciples who fled gave into the community violence. So far from suggesting that there were two crowds--one of wicked pharisees and the other of peace-loving simple Jews, Girard demonstrates the incredible strength of mob violence by arguing that the disciples themselves joined in--those closest to Jesus. While I find this hard to push so far, it certainly does demonstrate the strength of the violence.
