People are naturally competitive, and it makes sense that winning would be the outcome of imitative desire. However, I don’t always think there is a rivalry between the model and the imitator. Yes, the imitator wants to be like their model but it does not necessarily mean that want to be greater than them. If they do surpass the model I’m not sure if I would call that winning either. I see where you are coming from though. I agree with you that if a winner was declared between Nathan and Mithridanes it would be Nathan. Nathan is not as competitive as Mithridanes, or if he is he does not show it. Also, could it be possible that if Mithridanes did surpass Nathan that Nathan would consider it a victory too? In other words if he knows Mithridanes is modeling himself after him and helps him (Mith) be more like him (Nathan) then wouldn’t they both win if/when Mithridanes got what he desired? Or do you think this would not be good enough for Mithridanes? I also agree that Mithridanes would most likely pick a new model because Nathan seems too eager to simply give him what he wants, which to anyone really competitive is really an insult.
