I too noticed the mythological markers in my reading of the Tristan and Isolde tale. They are especially evident in Beroul's The Romance of Tristan. Yet, Beroul, rather than playing into the cycle, works to reveal the mechanism. Every accusation against Tristan and Isolde is countered by the author reminding his audience of the envy of the accusers and his esteem for the protagonists. Indeed, the poet is so strongly opposed to the nobles that one almost is persuaded to believe the pronouced chastity of the lovers (despite clear evidence to the contrary). In going to the extreme against the court scapegoating Tristan, the poet begins to scapegoat the nobles as the cause of the tragedy.
