The British sitcom Red Dwarf is another example of sci-fi with mimetic rivalry. The series basic story is that a freight ship has had a nuclear explosion killing all the crew. The only survivor is a man who had been frozen for the rest of the trip for keeping a cat on board. His bunkmate is ressurected as a hologram and his cat has evolved over the years into humanoid creature.

The rivalry is between the man, Lister, and the hologram, Rimmer. The first is pretty much a bum, but he is the one with the body. Rimmer is always thwarted for not having one.
