I have actually read the first novel based on that series. It's called "Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers". Great book. I liked how you mentioned the rivalry between Lister and Rimmer. The rivalry between the difference of a corporeal body is there, but I also think that they are almost co-dependent on each other. After all, Rimmer was made into a hologram by the computer Holly in order to keep Lister sane. I think the rivalry is perfect because it's so completely balanced. Rimmer kind of acts like the brains and Lister acts like the brawn/body. They need each other in a way that uses their rivalry for productive ends. Each has what the other lacks and so while they rivalry each other and antagonize each other so much, they still work well together. It's a great example of a good or productive rivalry, one which we don't tend to think about too often.
