I think this song is a parody of claims to victim status by certain members of the music industry. So that I don't show my complete foolishness (or use phrases that mark me as really old), I'll just cite wikipedia: Rockin' the Suburbs

"Rockin' the Suburbs" is a song by Ben Folds on the album of the same name. It is Ben Folds' biggest solo hit so far, gaining radio and MTV airplay (though "Landed" and "Bitches Ain't Shit" achieved higher chart positions on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., this was mostly due to their popularity on the iTunes Music Store rather than radio airplay). It was written by Ben Folds as an attack on Nu Metal and the aggressive, complanatory nature of this style of music. In concerts Folds has stated that if Stevie Wonder could write happy songs in the 60s as a blind, black man, then Nu-metal bands have no right to complain about their white, suburban existence in their music."

So Ben Folds is trying to strip them of their victim status, showing it for the sham it is. He makes Girard's (and Nietzsche's)very point: there's certain amount of prestige (and cash) in being a victim and all scramble to claim this status. I'm just not so sure Ben Folds is trying to claim it for himself.

And to conclude, I'll just say this: what Fred Durst did to George Michael's "Faith" was a crime--not that George Michael's "Faith" wasn't a crime to begin with.
