Subject: Insanity?

"The mind of a persecutor creates a certain type of illusion and the traces of his illusion confirm rather than invalidate the existence of a certain kind of even, the persecution itself in which the witch is put to death" (Scapegoat, 11).

This line immediately reminded me of the Insanity Plea that is used so often in the court systems. Defendants use the Insanity Plea as an excuse to seek an easier judgment or to possibly get off completely. However, according to Girard, this plea would in fact do the complete opposite of what it is used for today. The illusions of a person - their "insanity" - merely serve to enhance the persecution. This event, this persecution, really did happen. For how often the Insanity Plea is used, I become skeptical of it's honesty. It seems like everyone in the past 10 years is using the Insanity Plea to get off. Huh.
